An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Over the following months the bone fuses to it, and a crown, bridge or denture is then attached on top. Unlike a removable denture, the replacement tooth is fixed and is cleaned in much the same way as a natural one. Suitability depends on the amount and quality of bone available, which we assess with an examination and x-rays.

How long does the whole implant process take?
The post needs time to fuse with the bone before the crown is fitted, so the full process usually spans several months. The surgical placement itself is a single appointment.
Is implant surgery painful?
The area is fully numbed during placement. Afterwards most people describe mild soreness for a few days, managed with ordinary pain relief.
Is everyone suitable for an implant?
Not always. Enough healthy jawbone, controlled gum disease and generally good health are needed. Smoking and some medical conditions affect healing. An assessment with x-rays will tell you where you stand.
